The Landakot school is one of the oldest running schools in Iceland, established in 1896. It is a comprehensive school for pupils between the age of 5-16 (1st-10th grade in Iceland with an additional preschool class for 5 year olds). The school is run according to Icelandic laws and regulations on compulsory schools. The curriculum follows the National Curriculum but has its own emphasis and is constantly being developed; our emphasis is on Mathematics, Icelandic and foreign languages (English, French, Spanish, German and Danish).
The School was formerly run by the Catholic Church of Iceland but was made independent in 2005. The Catholic Church provides the school with a particularly beautiful and friendly school building in Tungata in Reykjavik. Every effort is made to keep the atmosphere homelike and friendly. Children of Catholic denomination number only around 17% of the student population. The school is open to all children regardless of faith. Each school day, however, starts with a prayer and there are religious pictures both in the classrooms and the hallways. Otherwise, there is no more emphasis on religion that in other Icelandic schools.
Our students currently number around 162 placed in 11 classes (one class per each grade).
In the school year 2006-7 our students had origins in 25 countries: Mexico, India, Somalia, Columbia, Finland, Austria, Brazil, South-Africa, United States, Latvia, Lithuania, France, Denmark, United Kingdom, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine,Romania, Bulgaria, Germany, China, Thailand, Spain, Italy and of course Iceland; many receive extra Icelandic individual lessons for students of foreign background. We, also, offer extra curriculum activities for French speaking students under the supervision of a French speaking teacher so they can meet other French speaking children and to strength their knowledge of French.
Student can start any time of the school year and we are always glad to receive parents and prospective students. The only thing you have to do is to arrange an interview either by phone (510-8200), by e-mail (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
The School's Mission |
||
We believe that a school community, comprised of students, staff, and parents, should be a safe heaven characterized by care and warmth where student and staff are comfortable and where there is anticipation each day to work on challenging tasks. The values that we want to emphasis are joy, tolerance, ambition, charity, trust and confidence.
