School starts on August 23

School starts at Landakotsskóli on Monday 23 August. Due to disease control and meeting restrictions, this first day will be the same as last fall.

Due to these disease control and meeting restrictions, this first school day will be the same as last fall: each class will meet their homeroom teacher and one specialty teacher and spend time with them in and around the school in their assigned section. If you want to meet me, Anna Guðrún, project manager, Laurie Berg, head of the international department; Helga Stefánsdóttir, head of special education or Karitas Sumati, head of after-school, please send us an e-mail and we will find a time and place for a meeting.Similar to a plan we implemented last year, we have decided to divide the school into three separate self-contained sections:

Section 1, Yellow Section,-west side of building where cafeteria is located (International K-3rd grade and Icelandic 5 ára-3b classes)
Section 2-Blue Section center of school building (International 4th-7th grade and Icelandic 4b and 5b)
Section 3- Green Section-area closest to Túngata street,International 8th-10th grades and Icelandic 6th-10th grades

Students and staff will not be able to move between sections and instead will remain only in their assigned section. This means that students' schedules will be slightly different for now until such time that students and staff can again move freely through the school building without any restrictions. We have made every effort to keep the new student schedules as similar as possible to their standard schedules.

I was hoping that this time of separation was over and done with now that we have all been vaccinated, but we have all become accustomed to it and know-how to make adaptions in the school so that were ensure the best possible conditions. If everything goes well, these extra precautions will not be necessary, and we will be able to relax the restrictions quickly.

For the teenagers, these restrictions will have a minimal effect on their schedule. The only exception is we will not be able to offer the val elective courses as many of the elective teachers are in another assigned section at this time. We also think it is a good idea to wait on mixing the groups that will be vaccinated on Monday and Tuesday since the vaccination takes time to build efficacy. We will offer interesting projects in each class for part of the elective hours. The math elective on the Icelandic side will be able to start since each class is working independently.

For all grade levels and classes, teaching will be as close to normal as possible, except the children will not start immediately with all the special classes that they would normally attend. Instead, they will spend more time in some classes, dependent on what special classes are available in each quarantine compartment. Supervising teachers will soon send you a new timetable that will cover these first days of school.

The school canteen is in the quarantine compartment where the youngest ones will be studying so they will be the only ones receiving hot food. Other students can register with the school lunch programme and will receive a packed lunch box. Packed lunches include sandwiches or pasta salads, fruit, or yoghurt or skyr and unsweetened drinks. Here is a link to the food subscription. Please note, once you have registered, you have committed to subscribe until the end of September and no changes can be made until the end of September. Food subscriptions must be canceled one week in advance for the following month. To register for lunch, please submit the food registration form before Friday.

We do not think it is safe not to invite parents into the school buildings at this time and appreciate your understanding and cooperation with this. With these more restrictive measures, we hope that we will not have to close the whole school or a large part if an infection occurs.

Students are expected to bring a packed snack on the first day (fruit or vegetables and water) and from then on. Students will receive study materials and books, so it is important that they also bring their school bags this first day of school.

Margrét Sigurðardóttir and Anna Lísa Jónsdóttir will invite parents of five-year-olds to individual interviews this first day of school.

Homeroom teachers of other students who are new to the school will call guardians to a meeting this or next week, either in person or online.

Younger students, 1st - 3rd grade and A group will meet on the playground for the younger children with their parents and meet their homeroom teachers and other teacher before they go into the school alone with their teachers. Parents pick up the children two hours later. Two class representatives should be elected for each class.

YELLOW SECTION - WEST HOUSE
